Asmara – World Food Day and International Day for the Eradication of Poverty commemorated in Eritrea.
This year’s event started with one week outreach activity on MDGs organized by UNO Asmara in cooperation with National Confederation of Eritrean workers. The MDG campaign focused on the new report of the 2012 MDG. The participants from all regional administrations of Eritrea received copies of the MDGs and discussed the results outlined in the report. This year’s MDG report highlights important milestones on progress on poverty reduction and the progress on the enrollment rate of primary school.
The main commemoration event was held at National Confederation of Eritrean workers with the presence of Ministers, Governors, diplomatic corps, members of agricultural cooperatives, UN Agencies and the general public were among the dignitaries.
During the commemoration event, the Advisor for the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Emanuel stated that the 32nd of World Food Day is being commemorated under the theme of “Agricultural Cooperatives: Key to feeding the World”. The Advisor to the Minister further highlighted that cooperatives across all sectors provide more than 100 million jobs and the top worldwide 300 cooperatives were responsible for an aggregate turnover of US 1.1 trillion which can be accounted for the 10th largest economy in the world. Cooperatives in Eritrea started to flourish in early 1990s.
On his behalf the FAO Representative and the UN Acting Resident Coordinator Mr Mokati Mokaseisi said that food security is something that we should talk less about it but do more of. However, added the FAO representative “Recently it has been on the spotlight again for entirely negative reasons. This was due to the concerns about droughts and floods that continue to conquer in the bread baskets of the world and as the result food prices started to hike”.
FAO’s message highlighted that the role of agricultural cooperatives in securing food and calls for strengthening these cooperatives.
The UN SG’s message on the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty as delivered by UNDP OIC Ms Verity Nayagah emphasized that “poverty is easy to denounce but difficult to combat. The message calls for concrete support for the needy and poor.
As part of the commemoration event, the National Confederation of Eritrean Workers (NCEW) in cooperation with UNO Asmara organized an outreach activity on MDG campaign in all regional administrations. All the NCEW members and Cooperatives participated in the one week MDG campaign.
